ENGLISH VERSION

The Port saga with DP World has shown how we as citizens of one nation lack unity in defending the interests of the country, in defending our resources from being exploited into the hands of foreigners as only a few religious leaders, politicians and independent thinkers came forward to publicly address the issue. Many opposition leaders obtain favors from the government in power, thus failing to defend the interests of the people and the country as a whole. It has been almost three years since the establishment of the multi-party system, but no concrete action has been taken by the opposition parties to bring about real change in the country. This is because political parties have gotten into a comfort zone and some have become like stamps of the ruling party. This has become clear recently as the opposition parties remained silent after the President made it clear that she appointed her son in law, Mohamed Mchengerwa as the Minister Minister of State, Office of the President, Regional Administrations and Local Governments - TAMISEMI because she knows that he will be able to bring the ruling party CCM to win the local government elections later in the year, the election which is managed by the Commission for National Elections and coordinated closely with TAMISEMI. Mchengerwa after his appointment stated that he will fight anyone who wants to play with the government. After this incident, opposition parties were to say that they will not go to the elections without a new constitution because the President has already assured herself that her party will win the elections. Young people who are the nation's workforce, many have made their political party’s work their main source of income, thas led to madness to the point of being unable to criticize the government nor make the right decisions when it is required of them as they consider their personal interests.

There is a need to be united in the demands of the new constitution as it will bring a good framework for the development of our nation. We can learn from our neighbors in Kenya on how the power of solidarity can act as a tool to bring about real change. Politicians should reflect on their reality and join forces with the people in the fight for a new constitution as attaining a new constitution is possible in a short time frame of six months and not wait until 2026 as the government planned.
