ENGLISH VERSION

Demonstrations are legally allowed in our constitution as one of the ways for citizens to express and defend their arguments to the ruling Government. Tanzanians have woken up and joined forces in defending their arguments to the rulers through protests. The citizens' public demonstrations are scheduled to be launched in Mbeya on November 9, 2023. The arguments to be presented by the public are to oppose the port agreement with DP World which is not aimed at benefiting the country but benefiting those in power. Previously, the people used the court to oppose this contract, but the Government with its hand pressured the court to give a verdict in their favor. The second agenda that will be represented by the people in this protest is the demand of the people to get a new constitution before the 2025 elections.

The need for a new constitution is a long-term need of the people but the government has been using various delaying tactics to ensure that they remain in power by delaying the process of obtaining a new constitution so that the 2025 elections can be held without a new constitution. The demand of the people is to get a new constitution before the 2025 elections to ensure that the elections are held in a fair and equitable environment with an independent commission so that the government that will be found will be a people's government that will work to serve the people.

The third agenda of the protests is to ask the government to immediately stop evacuating the Maasai from their ancestral lands of Ngorongoro and Loliondo under the pretext of conservation when it has been giving permission to foreigners to hunt and build tourist hotels in the same lands. The forced eviction of the Maasai has led to serious human rights violations. Therefore, the people want the Government to recognize and quickly fulfill the rights of the Maasai to their ancestral lands. This demonstration will be led by the former ambassador Dr. Wilbrod Silaa, activist Mdude Nyangali, and lawyer Boniface Mwabukusi. Demonstrations will continue to take place on the 9th of every month but will be moved several days ahead or behind when that date falls on a day of worship (Friday, Saturday or Sunday). The uniform for the protestors will be white dress indicating that it is indeed a peaceful protest.

Citizens have urged each other to be careful during the protest to avoid legal offenses that can prevent the protest but also so that the police do not get a chance to arrest any citizen for criminal offenses. The youth are the nation's workforce and citizens union is important in bringing about change as the ultimate say over the country’s resources belongs to the citizens.
