ENGLISH VERSION

The port saga has created a buzz in the country and many Tanzanians have expressed their opinions on the issue. Freedom to freely express oneself and to be heard is a constitutional right of every Tanzanian, especially in matters concerning the development of the country. Citizens are opposing the Tanzanian port contract with DPW because the process did not involve the citizens in the initial stages but also the conditions attached to the contract are exploitative and not aimed at developing the nation through investment but rather aimed at losing the port's resources to foreigners from Dubai.
The public's fear concerning the DPW port contract has also been contributed by the bad history of the DP World company in the countries it has invested in to be linked to incidents of corruption and entering into oppressive agreements.

Instead of answering the people with basic arguments, the Government has decided to use the police force to threaten those who oppose this agreement in order to push for this agreement to be accepted by the people. We have seen the former president of the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) Dr. Rugemereza Nshala being threatened a few days after giving his opinion on the port agreement and several other citizens have been ordered to report to the police stations to give account on the opinions they gave on DPW.
The reign of terror has serious consequences in the future as it can lead to chaos in the country and as a nation we should not get there. The only way to solve this is to give room for the people to be heard and give the corresponding answers based on strong grounds. If the people's arguments on the DPW contract were considered from their onset, this port debate would not be ongoing. This debate is still ongoing because the voices of the people have not been heard. Citizens should be listened to because they are the sole owners over their country’s resources.
