Uelewa wa wananchi juu ya masuala ya muhimu katika kuleta maendeleo ya nchi bado ni mdogo. Wananchi wetu wanafuatilia sana mambo ya mpira kuliko uchaguzi wao.  Uchaguzi wa Kenya umekuwa ni wa uwazi ndio maana umefwatiliwa sana na Watanzania. Wakenya wameweza kuendesha uchaguzi wao kwa njia ambayo sisi Watanzania tunaweza kuiga. Lakini kama nchi tumekwamishwa kwa sababu mbalimbali ikiwemo tamaduni ya watanzania sio ya kusema na kusimamia ukweli. Pia katiba yetu ina mapungufu makubwa ambayo yamekwamisha demokrasia ya kweli kuweza kushamiri. Kwa kuangalia Kenya, tume yao ni huru kiasi cha kuweza kuamrisha polisi kuchukulia hatua baadhi ya wanasiasa waliokuwa wanaleta fujo pindi cha uchaguzi. Uhuru wa vyombo vya habari pia ni sehemu ambayo kama nchi tumeshindwa kutekeleza haki hii ambayo imekua ni chanzo cha maovu mengi katika jamii na sii tuu ya uchaguzi.  Wananchi wamehimizana kupigania mifumo bora ya uchaguzi kwa kuanzia na hitaji la katiba mpya.

Citizens' understanding of important issues in bringing about the development of the country is still little. Tanzanian citizens are more interested in football than their own elections. The Kenyan elections have been transparent and democratic which has drawn the attention of many Tanzanians. Kenyans have been able to conduct their elections in a way that we Tanzanians can imitate. But as a country free and fair elections have been hindered for various reasons including the culture of Tanzanians when it comes to speaking and acting on truth. Also, our constitution has major shortcomings that have prevented true democracy from flourishing. Looking at Kenya, their electoral commission is independent enough such that it even ordered the police to take action against some of the politicians who are causing chaos during the election period. Freedom of the media is also an important democratic aspect where as a country we have failed to make sure that this right is respected but instead it has become the source of many evils in the society not only in elections. Citizens have encouraged each other to fight for better electoral systems starting with the demand for a new constitution.
