Land grabbing has picked up pace since 2021. The government’s allocation of residential areas as conservation areas has been a major source of land grabbing for citizens. The cons of the government declaring the people’s residential areas as a reserve has canceled the rights of citizens to own land. We have seen a recent example of the people of Ngorongoro who were forced to move from their long-term ancestral lands to give way for conservation. Another reason that leads to land grabbing is the increase in boundaries of conservation areas from their initial boundary plans.
This has also contributed significantly to the looting of people’s lands, a good example is seen in the western borders of the Serengeti where as today they are 50 kilometers ahead from their initial outlay in 1959. These incidents of looting of the people’s land by the government have many citizens questioning if it is right for the government to allocate land for the benefit of the few and harm thousands of Tanzanians as was seen in the Ngorongoro case, the Government has suspended important community services and health services to force the existing citizens to leave in order to turn their areas into isolated forests and reserves.
The government in its efforts to develop cities has led some Tanzanians to be robbed of their lands in order to allow the construction of modern cities. It is estimated that more than 250,000 residents of Mabwepande will face the threat of having their areas taken away for the construction of a satellite city like Kigamboni. In all these, the Government has been seen looting the lands of the people for the interests of the few.
